VMS Ltd is celebrating the career progression of employee Sarah Ransom thanks to our dedicated training and development programme.
With a degree in Zoology and previous experience as a park ranger, which saw her gain her chainsaw, brush cutter and strimmer tickets alongside skills in coppicing and habitat management, Sarah joined the VMS Ltd team in January 2022.
Since then, she has progressed from general operative to contract manager and recently achieved her Level 4 Diploma in Arboriculture.
Sarah’s desire to further develop her skills was kickstarted by the support of Kev Garfield, head of business support at VMS: “Kev has been great in providing me with inspiration in terms of how I could develop my career, and what options were out there that I didn’t really know about.
“When I first joined the VMS team, I was going to be on the tools while also helping out in the office with risk assessments and scoping works. Then Kev mentioned about doing my Level 4 Diploma in Arboriculture and I thought that sounded amazing!”
Sarah dug deep into learning, starting her Level 4 Diploma after only a few months in the job. “I had a good couple of months here to sort of settle in, get to know everybody and understand how VMS works before I started the course.
“It looked really intense and I was a bit wary of doing it but VMS allowed me time to do it, which was really helpful. I went through phases of saying I can’t do it but everyone here was like, yes you can!”
Last year Sarah also completed a three-day professional tree inspector course and has recently enrolled onto a bat inspection course which involves undertaking 100 hours volunteering experience to gain her first level bat licence.
“I’m very, very grateful for the training and development I have received here at VMS,” continues Sarah. “Just looking at where I’ve come over four years, I think that’s a fantastic achievement. The fact that VMS has invested time and money into my development in order to progress my career is fantastic.
“The teams here have all got so much experience and just seeing how the guys themselves bring on the development of the newer people coming in, is really nice too.”
Speaking on the mentorship provided to Sarah, Kev Garfield said: “It has been fantastic to see Sarah develop over the last four years.
“Her passion for arboriculture and vegetation management is clear to see and it remains just as strong now as when she first joined. The training and development we give at VMS is really helping our employees – such as Sarah – build rewarding, long-term, careers.”
